Onan's Mistake (Story of Joseph #9)
Genesis 38 is an interesting chapter -- quite often seen as an "addition" to the story. It doesn't seem to fit. You can skip it and the flow of the text actually seems better! However, I believe Genesis 38 is actually the key to understanding how the entire story points to Christ. As we begin the chapter, I'll deal with two "modern-day" dilemmas first, and then I'll show the path from Genesis 38 to the cross at Calvary. Today we'll look at Onan, and why God killed him. If God killed him for "spilling his seed on the ground," does that set a precedence for birth control today? Should married Christians only have sex when they intend to have a baby?
